How To Cope Up With Jet Lag?

The term ‘jet lag’ can be better termed as the difference between your physiological clock (operated by your body) and the environmental clock (determined by the time zone you are in). It is a physical phenomenon, and it can have great impacts on your body and your business plans if not adjusted accordingly.

The physiological problems arise due to many reasons. Your body is evolving through a biological process that determines its basic necessities such as food, sleep and excretion.  If you are moving in different time zones, it would become very difficult for your body to manage these processes. At times, you may feel that your day is not ending, and the sleeping hours reduce to zero, causing your body to suffer a lot.

The sociological problems arise when you start planning your business trip or vacation on the basis of your local time zone to realize that you will miss an important meeting or the day you committed to meet your dear ones due to the wicked ‘jet lag.’ The business will affect, so will your mental stability.

Jet lag is a ‘modern age’ phenomenon, and there are no solid solutions to escape from it. However, with proper care, you can guard your body and mind from getting affected from it.

Here are a few tips to cope up with this situation.

  • Avoid planning important meeting or official visits the day you land in the new place. It will take a day’s time for your body to get adjusted to the new time zone.
  • Schedule the most important meeting or activity in accordance with your native time zone, provided it is acceptable to the other party. Your body will resist the busy schedule of your new ‘day’ when it needs its ‘night’s’ rest.
  • Do not drive any vehicles the day you reach the new time zone. It is noticed that a person’s reflex performance is poor immediately after a jet lag.
  • Pre-adjust the lag. This is a safer way to compete the jet lag. If you have a day or two to prepare for your travel, this would be an ideal solution to take proper rest and adjust your routine at home to the oncoming time zone.
  • If you are on prescription drugs, such as insulin, maintain the regular interval between the dozes irrespective of the time on your watch. It is also advisable to delay your medications by one or two hours.
  • Utilize the traveling hours maximum for your sleep so that you can remain active in the new location regardless of its time zone.
  • Dehydration is a common problem with air travel. Drink plenty of water during and after the travel. Avoid all types of alcohol drinks such as champagne, scotch, wine, vodka, etc., till you get adjusted to the new time zone. If you are so compelled to drink, opt for a light beer.

Being a modern-day traveler, every professional needs to get trained appropriately to solve the problems associated with jet lag.
