Green fields in Murcia, what ever next? I have become accustomed to the harsh landscape away from the country side of the rivers but on a recent visit I was shocked.

But what a transformation, I drove into the country side to find long grasses all around reminding me of an English May. The hills that used to be all shades of red and brown now had a tinge of green with yellow.

Our first Summer Visit to Murcia during a hot August in 2005 almost turned my wife away from ever visiting again, scorched countryside and hose pipe bans left a desert that made us wonder why we ever bought a holiday home in the region at all.

One month of rain fall this April totally changed everything, plants that have lain dormant for several years had sprung from the ground with rain and sunshine to feed the leaves to create luscious pastures.

So what is so special about Murcia? Just when you think you have seen it in all its glory it pulls another card from its sleeve, I saw pictures of people wading through flood water in the main street of Puerto de Mazarron, but a month later all is forgotten and the Spanish simply get on with their Mediterranean lives.

We all have our favourites and some like me have been luckily enough to find my special place and buy a home, Murcia is still catching up, I wish it wouldn’t do it quite so quickly.

During my first visit in 2002 I saw a duck, 2 seagulls and a Coke bottle floating in the Puerto de Mazarron harbour, now they are putting the finishing touches to a fantastic new marina; so much has changed and all of is very positive.

Money earned from taxes of visiting tourists and people such as my self buying holiday homes is well spent improving services and infrastructure.Murcia is coming to an age to accept visitors and really show off, do it now in case it loses its charm but deep down I feel it won’t.
